  • Yes, the program fully supports students with special needs. Students with special needs are more than welcome to play and participate. If a family indicates that their child has special needs on the application, Aren contacts them directly to discuss how the students can participate. They craft classes so that these students can engage with all others. Aren also asks about current I.E.P’s or 504 plans and tries to match learning to their day school/home environment. No student will ever be turned away.

  • The schedule is quite flexible. While students are encouraged to attend every program they're signed up for, the program understands that life happens. There's no penalty for skipping a class. If desired, students can contact Aren to get a breakdown of what was covered in the missed class and can receive emailed learning materials they can work on independently at home.

  • No, you don't need to buy materials for each class. Programs and activities are designed using items commonly found around the house. Before the program sessions begin, families will receive a document outlining the types of items needed. It's up to you whether to get everything listed, if you don’t already have them. If a student doesn't have something required, the teacher will provide alternative items that won’t detract from the effectiveness of the day's lessons.

  • Yes, families are encouraged to participate with their children in class. Simply let the instructor know if you intend on joining. All family members are welcome. Additionally, there will be one family day each session where all families are directly invited for a fun season geared towards community building and socialization.

  • Most lessons are designed for students to work independently. However, there are a few cooking lessons that may require family assistance, particularly with the use of the microwave. Families will receive notice of these upcoming projects a week in advance.

  • In an online setting, students can receive help and extra support through various methods. Instructors are trained to "read the room" and identify students who may be struggling. Throughout the lesson, open-ended questions will be asked about understanding. During moments of perceived struggle, instructors will ask if anyone has questions or will openly reiterate instructions for particular sections without singling out a specific student. This approach ensures that all students feel supported without undue attention drawn to those who may need extra assistance.

Additionally, families can opt for their child to stay online a little longer with the instructor to go over anything or have a conversation. Families may also request 1:1 time with the instructor based on individual student needs. These personalized options further enhance the support available to students in an online setting.

  • Yes, our program occasionally uses incentives to motivate students. Periodically, special challenges will be presented to the group. If a student receives an award, certificate, or prize, it will be mailed to their home within a week. These incentives add an extra layer of excitement and encouragement for students to participate and excel in our program.

  • In an online setting, conflict is handled using Restorative Justice principles. This approach focuses on restoration and understanding rather than shame and punishment. If conflict arises, instructors will use this methodology to address the behaviors, engage in conversation, and move forward in agreed-upon ways. The foundation of addressing conflict is understanding its cause and finding solutions to resolve it.

We maintain a bullying-free zone where all students are welcome and appreciated for who they are. Students caught bullying will be asked to leave for the day, and their families will be contacted about the incident. If the behavior persists, a family conference will be requested, and further participation will be halted until the meeting takes place. Continued disruptive behavior may result in students being asked to leave the program. If you would like more information about Restorative Justice, please contact Aren directly, and he will be more than happy to share.
